Up for auction is a vintage deck of cards circa 1870. My research, though limited by my being a novice and not knowledgeable about playing cards, tells me that this deck is probably German possibly made by Frommann & Bunte in Darmstadt, Germany. Again, as one quite devoid of knowlegde of what a "transformation" deck is supposed to be, even a complete fool would recognize that these cards are very different from what one would find in a a deck of Bicycle Playing cards. Someone, many yerars ago, may have been as puzzled as I was as to how to identify the picture cards as to which is the Ace, the King, the Queen and the Jack, so that person wrote the words "Ace", "King", Queen", and " Jack" in red ink at the top of the picture cards to identify them. As to the number cards, in each suit, the 2-10 have different picture caricatures on them and the number of hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs are hard to identify quickly as for example telling a nine of spades from a seven or a six from an eight etc. Unless you are used to them, you have to stop and count the symbols on a card to determine its number, and that can be puzzzeling, especially since the suits are often incorporated into the caricature. .
