VINTAGE TUAREGLEATHER AND WOOD CAMEL SADDLE ART PIECE Up for auction is this wonderful Camel saddle made by the Tuareg tribe of Niger This beautifully handcrafted piece measures 11 inches in height, the length is 6 ¼ inches and the width is 4 inches. This is a vintage piece, handled carefully and kept on a shelf. Some small adornments are slightly loosening with time. The saddle is complete and is wonderful. The Tuareg saddles are formed by stitching and gluing brightly colored leather embossed into a forked wooden base. The saddle is then embellished with the addition of delicate drawings as well as separate pieces of molded leather, brass studs and cut outs of metal. This small version could have been used as a model or an art piece. The Tuareg are a nomadic people who are found throughout the Western Sahara Desert and neighboring areas. This elaborate camel saddle is a type usually reserved for short trips or special occasions. The high back rest, prominent pommel and extensive leather and metal embellishments make these saddles prestige items for the tribal men. The Tuareg tribe of Niger are some of the last truly nomadic people.
