For many years, my grandpa worked for the Union Railroad in the Pittsburgh, PA area. He passed away in 1960. He gave this unique lantern to my mother before I was born in 1959. It is in GREAT condition! The lantern top is marked, "New York Dietz Vesta USA" The top brim(black) is marked, "U.R.R."(Union Railroad). The Union Railroad was a Class III switching railroad located in Allegheny County in western Pennsylvania. The Union Railroad carried only freight. It was used mainly to transport raw materials to the once vibrant steel mills of the Pittsburgh area. It was also used to transport the finished steel products. The red glass is marked, "Dietz Vesta New York USA" and also contains the Corning Glass trademark. The red glass also displays a very old, very unique eagle decal. It is brittle and fragile but nearly completely in tact. EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL!! I have looked at a lot of railroad lanterns and have not found one quite like this one. I realize that Dietz Vesta produced many lanterns for railroads throughout the country. I have found others the same style, but this one is unique. It is black and gold with the eagle decal. It would make an amazing addition to any collection! The lantern measures 9.5 inches high; 15 inches high if you include the handle. It is 6.25 inches wide. It measures 8 inches across at the widest part read more
