This sale is for an Anglo Indian hair comb of probably late 19th or early 20th century manufacture in antiqued gold tone metal. SIZE AND CONDITION: 5Â¾ x 4Â¼ ins; the ornament does show some signs of use and wear and could use a good clean but t are no missing stones and is in sound condition. This Anglo Indian hair comb is made in the design of a formalised lotus flower. The Lotus flower has been a popular symbol for hundreds of generations. It is one of the Eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune. In Oriental culture the lotus flower is a symbol of purity, which rises unsullied through muddy water. It symbolises the persistence of purity and tenacity despite the difficulties of the immediate environment. MORE INFORMATION BELOW: In the 1870s Queen Victoria became Empress of India and this led to an influx into Europe of ornaments made in India for the Western market. Fine metalwork is traditional in India, but a genre of ornaments was produced for the Western market, which was strictly for export. The form of these ornaments echoes much of the Indian and Indian influenced jewellery, which was produced at this period. These ornaments were made with oriental style motifs, such as lotus, dragons, phoenix, etc, but in a style which was not native to the lands in which they were produced. We find these imported ornaments in a wide variety of materials and styles, such as carved ivory and tortoiseshell, metal filigree, granulation, and gilt metal repousee sometimes set with coloured stones.
