Vintage Vietnam War NAVY Executive Officer RA-5C Flight Helmet w/ Eye Shields & Bag This incredible piece of history is coming directly from the original officer who wore it. He is now 83 years old and moving from Indiana to Florida. Lt. Commander Bill Barnes began his Navy career as an aviation cadet in 1950, and ended with his retirement as comptroller of naval air station Miramar, San Diego, which is now Marine Corp. Air Station Miramar. In September of 1952, his career as a naval aviator started at Miramar as a boot ass ENSIGN, assigned to VF-53 fighter squadron, flying F4U Corsairs, F9F-2 Panther jets, and deploying in December 1952 aboard the USS Valley Forge: CVA for a combat tour off the coast of Korea, flying F9F-5 Panther jets. All of you aficionados who are aware of that "Peace Action", will remember Bill Holden and Grace Kelly in the very, very accurate documentary film on naval carrier aviation, titled The Bridges of Tokori. Mr. Barnes was also a Thermo Nuclear Delivery Pilot, as well as a post-strike Thermo Nuclear reconnaissance pilot. He flew one combat tour in Korea as an Ensign, two combat tours as Lt. Commander in Vietnam, and one Mediterranean and combat tour as a commander, commanding a naval squadron. This collection of equipment comes from the RA-5C Vigilante Deployment, flown in the Vietnam war. . ** read more
