Dating from 1870-1874 is this estate sale fresh Hawkbill Pocket knife which measures 4 1/2" closed. It is adorned with fancy figured top boosters and a circular flat bottom. All of the metal is steel with fine Rose Wood handles ( there are no cracks in the wood ). The blade DOES talk in the open and closed positions. But, going to and from these points, it seems to be a bit lazy. This is the only negative about this knife I can find. Other than this, it is a very well made solid piece of cutlery. From what I gather, 18 cutlers, from New York Knife Co. Started this company after their boss told them they couldn't play baseball on their lunch break. Mostly Sheffield trained, they rented a floor at the Rider Erickson Engine Company in Walden, New York. When that building became too small, they bought the, Gills Andrews Mills in 1874. They used the Co-Op name with this move up until 1874 and then after this year it was later changed to Walden Knife Company. It's tang stamp reads, " Walden Co. O Knife Co. N. Y.
