VINTAGE WELLER ART POTTERY COPPERTONE FROG PLANTER The Weller Pottery Company was founded in Zanesville, Ohio in 1882. Weller entered the art pottery field in 1895 and continued to make art pottery until closing in 1948. In the late 1920's, Weller began producing a series of naturalistic, life-like animal figurines. Weller introduced the Coppertone line of figurines (mainly, frogs and turtles) during this time period. The Coppertone frogs and turtles had a heavily mottled green glaze which was created to mimic the green patina found on copper. The Coppertone line is one of the most recognized Weller lines and remains very popular with collectors. This store sale offers a small Coppertone planter comprised of a frog sitting on a lily pad holding onto an opened lotus blossom. The sitting frog stands almost 4" tall. And, from the front of the flower to the back of the lily pad, the piece measures nearly 4.5". T are no chips or cracks although the piece is heavily crazed. It is marked "H2" under the glaze on the bottom. I assume "H2" represents the code or initial of the person who inspected the piece. As I understand it, Weller marked these pieces with their trademark under the glaze or on a paper label. This planter must have been marked with a paper label which has since been removed.
