Vintage World Engines Blue Max Transmitter, Receivers andServos Here we have a working, fairly rare World Engines (Controlaire) Blue Max Six Channel PPM Transmitter (with battery), two receivers, a lot of servos, receiver battery, battery charger, and some other stuff. This equipment operates in the 27 MHz (still legal) band. Also included is an extra transmitter crystal because the receivers work on two different channels. One of the receivers works fairly well but exactly how well needs to be determined. The other has very short range. I believe all this equipment was from about 1970, or maybe a little later in the 70s. BLUE-MAX TRANSMITTER I installed new NiCd cells into the original battery pack so that I could test it. They are included. This transmitter uses 10 cells rather than the more typical 8 cells. A standard modern Futaba type charge port has been added to the bottom of the transmitter case. A vintage Futaba charger with cables for charging both the transmitter and receiver battery, below, is included.. It has a crystal socket inside so that the crystals can easily be changed to switch channels. I’m including crystals for 27.045 MHz and 27.145 MHz, which match the two receivers described below. The transmitter has six channels, however one of the two upper-channel slide switches is broken. Cosmetically, it decent, but is not without some flaws. Look at the close-up pictures. I’d be happy to take requests for additional pictures, which I can send via e-mail. I compared the RF output with that of other known good transmitters by viewing it with an oscilloscope. It looked good and it appears strong. Also, with the antenna pulled all the way up the power output meter goes well into the upper range. The antenna has been damaged and repaired. The top segment has been permanently soldered to the section just below it and the “eye protector” on the top had been replaced by one made of wood, and painted red. Because of these repairs the top section will not collapse into the rest of the antenna. WORLD ENGINES Controlaire M.A.N. 2-3-4 four channel receiver that I assume was an original mate to the Blue Max transmitter. It has matching four S-4a Servos. It operates on 27.145 MHz. This works, but has a very short range measured in single digits. So, without some work by a radio technician to figure the problem, it cannot be flown. It does not have a switch harness but it does have a Deans Connector to accept the receiver battery supplied. KRAFT GOLD SERIES four channel receiver. It has 6 working Kraft servos. This one appears to work much better than the other one. It easily works across my basement but I have not done an outside range check. Again, I give no guarantees as it would need a proper checkout due to its age. This one comes with a switch harness with Deans battery connector. A WORD ABOUT THE SERVOS: These are all four wire servos with what was apparently the common type 4-pin servo connector of the day. None of the servos included seem to be as quick as today’s modern three wire servos. I’m fairly certain that 3-wire servos can, however, be used with the receivers just by eliminating the battery pack center tap. ANOTHER NOTE: The pinout for the World Engine servos is not the same as that of the Kraft servos inasmuch as the red and black wires are swapped. So, you are warned! J AAA BATTERY PACK (used, and self fabricated), tested immediately after a full charge at 350 mAH.. I do not have a figure on the self-discharge rate. ALSO INCLUDED: 1) Two more ancient and large black servos from who-knows-where. J I’m including them because they have the same servo connectors (wired like the Kraft servos) and I have no need for them. 2) A couple of extra servo cables wired like the Kraft, just in case they come in handy. 3) A Kraft charger (receiver battery only?) that looks like it goes with the Kraft receiver.
