A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA With Its Canals, Roads & Distances from place to place along the Stage and Steam -Boat Routes. By Henry Schenk Tanner. from H.S. Tanner's "New Universal Atlas." Published Philadelphia 1845 by Carey & Hart. An attractive and desirable map of 19th century Virginia. Enhanced by original full hand colouring and attractive green rope border. Highly detailed, with roads, canals, railroads etc. To the right of the title is a fascinating "Profile of The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal" with its heights above sea level, place names etc. Also inset is a table of steamboat routes from Richmond to Norfolk, Washington and Baltimore and from Wheeling to Pittsburg and Cincinnati. A very scarce map. Fine unmarked condition other than light toning/soiling in margins. The original colour remains bright and fresh. No folds, blank verso, printed on heavy grade paper. Approx. 14" x 11" (365mm x 280mm) map area only, with good margins beyond. Please scroll right down for close up image.
