From a collection of German jasperware I recently acquired in an estate sale:A rare and beautiful grouping with a central high relief plaque and two cupid side panels.The center panel(with the Volkstedt blue mark on reverse) is 11 1/2" tall with a figural caving that projects 3/4" above the surface of the plaque. It's total depth is 1 1/2". The dreamy figure is lightly draped in billowing scarves and floats above the earth, near a little relief-carved, white owl.She inhabits a sage green, relief carved space with poppies, water lilies, flying bats, a suggestion of water and clouds... all bordered with sharply defined scrolls and scallops.Amazingly there is no damage-- no cracks and not the tiniest chip. Rarely is an example like this found in such pristine condition.Her companions are two cherubs investigating frogs. These plaques are unmarked, but complement the central plaque in theme and color. They measure about 7" tall and 1/2" deep.The one on the right, with the cherub sliding down a bamboo pole, has suffered a break and has an old repair. Although the repair was well done, there is a small chip missing from the back of the cherub's knee and on the reverse, some of the green clay is lost.
