This is not a dry history book as the author has included many anecdotes and interesting stories, like the one about the County's first jail in 1818 which was built by John Baker for $138 and an additional $10 for the lock. The books contain comprehensive information on early settlers, lots of family names, population, coal mining, lists early miners killed by 'after damp", lists towns and settlements in the county, post offices, list of settlers born before 1800, cemeteries for blacks and whites in the county and includes a map in the back of Volume 1, geological information, farm life, tenant farming, local industries like syrup making, log rolling, soap making, hog killing.
