is an antique civil musket lockplate.

It has a crown and VR on the left side and 1862 Tower on the right side.

I'm told that it is for a Pattern 1853 Enfield musket.

It measures 5 1/2" long.

See /tower-enfield-musket-rifle-civil-war-import-schuyler-hartley-graham-union.htm for a similar piece (although that one is decorated) and a possible example of the gun that it went on.

I don't know the first thing about guns, but if you search for 1862 tower gun on the internet and look at all the examples, I haven't seen one that had a hammer made like this one. Very primitive U shape. I'm told that the hammer is probably from a village blacksmith that wasn't the best in his trade.

I can't get the hammer to move, I don't know if I'm missing something or not on how to do that. T is a little lever on the back side that moves fine, so I wouldn't think that it would be rusted tight, but you buy it for whatever condition it is in.
