It was made in the Erzgebirge area of Germany, sometime around 1910 to 1930. The little toy is a wonderful tiny piece of folk art, measuring just 2 3/4" long. The Erzgebirge area of Germany, also called the Thurgian Mountains (Ore Mountains) was home to miners, until the ore ran out. The people in the area turned to making toys and holiday ornaments as a cottage industry, passing the tools and patterns from generation to generation; many of these families are still making toys today. The Erzgebirge area is 60% forest, so the majority of the items they made were made from wood, or wood products. These little wooden miniatures were sold in sets, or as singles, often in Christmas specialty catalogs. One such catalog was the Louis Lange catalog from 1923. Louis Lange was a German publisher in Chicago, and he put out Christmas catalogs featuring these tiny wooden toys, and other Erzgebirge holiday items. This little piece is in excellent conation, with a wonderful patina to the paint. There are no missing pieces or damage, and it is stamped Germany on the bottom. I have lots of the little wooden German pieces, so take a look! Please read more
