Up for your consideration is a VINTAGE WALL POCKET in the shape of an EGGPLANT or GOURD. It looks to be JAPANESE as it resembles SUMIDA POTTERY with its APPLIED THREE-DIMENSIONAL FIGURES. It also resembles some JAPANESE STUDIO POTTERY that I've come across in my research. T are no marks or signatures that I can see. It very well may have had a sticker that has come off. Gourds are a common subject in ASIAN DECORATIVE ITEMS. I believe it is an EARTHENWARE as it is quite HEAVY and base of the piece looks as such. It has a THICK MAJOLICA-LIKE GLAZE that has ALL-OVER CRAZING. Although not the classic SUMIDA POTTERY TYPE with the upper half only partially glazed, I found in my research that some are fully glazed as this one is. Also, I found that they are characteristically HEAVY as this one is as well. You, though, must make the determination as to the type of pottery it is. This wall pocket measures at approximately 12" high x 4 1/2" at its widest point. It depicts a man climbing up the side of a gourd with a young child peering his head out of a hole. They are both dressed in traditional garb. T are LEAVES and APPLIED VINES that grace the vegetable. On the back, t are two holes for hanging. The inside of the piece has glaze as well. This piece is in EXCELLENT CONDITION with NO CHIPS or CRACKS. Please SUPERSIZE to see this DELIGHTFUL read more
