Following World War II, the Gilbert family emigrated to Canada, and in 1949 they moved to� Chicago, Illinois . Gilbert received his formal art training at the� American Academy of Art � where he first became a protégé of� William Mosby . Gilbert produced paintings and drawings throughout his carrer, often capturing the psychology of his subjects within his work. Compositions for Gilbert's paintings involved a process of fine, tight line drawings with a working of oil paints on top. He credits� Anthony van Dyck � as one of his primary influences.
