Meerschaum can be found in various areas around Turkey. The porous nature of Meerschaum makes for a cool, dry and very clean smoke. Over time these pipes color from yellow, orange, red, and amber with the smoke and nicotine the pipe absorbs. Due to this ability, Meerschaum pipes do not need breaking in and the cake (carbon build up) should be kept thin. Meerschaum is fragile, like any clay pipe and should be treated with care. If looked after these pipes will last not only years, but generations.This vintage hand carved Meerschaum pipe is highly detailed, with every millimeter being carved or decorated in some unique and ornate way. The coloring of the Meerschaum is white to yellow. The chamber has some cake and the stem has a nice amber tortoise look with very minor chatter. This magnificent piece is in excellent vintage condition. There is no maker or artist's mark present. The pipe comes with a velvet lined leatherette case, which has some wear.
