Very sad news to report about Waterford. Under the new ownership, Waterford Crystal will no longer be made in Ireland & the factory in Ireland is permanently closed. It will be made in Germany from now on. Gone, too, are the days of 33% lead crystal. This high concentration of lead is what gave Waterford crystal the brilliance, luminanc e, radiance & sparkle that made it head & shoulders above the rest. This quality is also the reason a piece of Waterford crystal felt so heavy & substantial. From now on Waterford crystal will be made of 24% lead crystal - the same as the other companies use. From what I understand, t will no longer be a factory dedicated to only produce Waterford crystal , as the factory in Ireland had been . A local crystal factory's equipment will be used. All the people who worked in the Irish factory , from the newest desk clerk to the best designers , have either recently left on their own or lost their jobs. Holiday Heirlooms blown glass ornaments will be now made in China. A few of the recent ones have already come from t Before, these had been made in Poland, Romania & the surrounding areas by highly skilled glassblowers using centuries old techniques. These lovely ornaments have a very delicate, eggshell quality to them. The ones from China are heavier & not as fine. A bit of good news : I just found out that Jim O'Leary - Design Director, Martin Ryan & John Connolly - Master Design Craftsmen, have been brought back by the new company. This is Mr. O'Leary's 50th year with Waterford , indeed a great time for celebration. All new crystal pieces will still only be 24% lead crystal , but it's great to know that these dedicated craftsmen will still be a guiding force for the company they've spent many decades with. It's my opinion that Waterford crystal pieces made of 33% lead crystal & blown glass ornaments from Eastern Europe will be at a premium from now on. This Waterford Horse Head Bottle Stopper was hand made in Austria from the purest 33% crystal. It is acid etched with the Waterford name and hallmark . The Waterford green and gold sticker is attached. This stopper is BRAND NEW . The light reflects beautifully through it's sculpted lines. This mighty crystal stallion head lends a touch of class & elegance to any occasion. It comes wrapped in Waterford's signature tissue paper. The original paperwork, along with the inventory tag is included. Sorry, no box. This lovely stopper is large at approx. 5" long . The horse's head itself is 3". The part that fits into the bottle is hand ground for a tight fit . It was hand checked by Waterford artisans an average of 4 times for any imperfections. That's what made Waterford products weigh more & have that special brilliance which made it "head & shoulders" above the rest.
