WEDGWOOD Dipped Black Jasperware Spill Vase C1850 I have for auction a 19th Century (C.1850) Spill Vase offered in excellent condition with no damage, cracks, chips or restoration, I also have an identical Spill Vase as pictured offered in a separate auction which could be classed as a pair but are offered separately. Spill vases were originally used to keep folded bits of paper or thin strips of wood known as "Spills" these in turn were used to light candles and tobacco pipes from the grate of the fire, the first known WEDGWOOD Spill Vase was made around C.1775. This example is known as "Acanthus" due to the prominent leaf design around the Spill Vase, as you can see from the photos there are "Rams Heads" linked by "Shell Garlands" along with scrolled plants and thistles Height of the Spill Vase is 5.75" with a 2.25" diameter Impressed markings to the base (of both) include - WEDGWOOD 6 and a makers mark This (these) Spill Vases date from between 1844 - 1859, as there are no 3 letter marks which came into effect in C.1860. I am keeping the same description for each of the Spill Vases as they are both in excellent condition and RARE TO FIND SUCH A PAIR IN SUCH EXCELLENT CONDITION
