This auction is for an old Wedgwood china plate from the Cornell University series. This one features The Crescent in the center. This is an attractive transferware plate with a rim design that includes trees and scenes from the area around Cornell. It is 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It is in very good, gently used condition without chips, cracks, or significant wear. This one has a little bit of glaze crazing (little lines in the glaze) on the front. I do not see any utensil scratches. On the back, the clear glaze is thicker near the edges than in the center, and w it is thicker, it has yellowed a bit over the years. This does not affect the front of the plate. The plate has both printed and impressed marks. The printed mark is Wedgwood Etruria England The Crescent 1933 Cornell University. T is also a printed mark from the importer, Jones McDuffee and Stratton, Boston. The impressed mark is Made in England WEDGWOOD, followed by 4 characters, 10R33 for October of 1933. According to Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks, the first character is for the month the plate was made, the second is for the artist, and the final two are for the year the plate was made.
