The Danes observed a custom of taking a platter of delicacies to friends at the holidays. To honor the giver, recipients would hang the plate after the food was eaten. By the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, the Christmas plate tradition became popular in other parts of Europe . Every Christmas since 1969, Wedgwood, the famous English manufacturer of fine china and developer of Jasperware in 1770, offers a limited edition collectors' plate. The modern collector plate ranges in cost from $75 to $125. This auction features plates from 1972, 1976, 1977, 1981, and 1986.
