W. J. WhiteWilliam John White ( 1850 - 1923) was one of but only a handful of American chewing gum pioneers. Even though other individuals such as Adams were using and selling "chicle" (a rubber like substance from the Sapodilla tree) as chewing gum - it would be many years later - before chicle became popular given it had no flavor. Things changed in 1880...when an individual named William White made an important discovery and solved the problem of chicle not absorbing/holding its flavors. He combined flavors with sugar and corn syrup then blended the mixture with the chicle which solved t he problem. For taste he added peppermint extract and discovered that peppermint stayed in the gum while chewing much longer than other flavors. I t was William White who was responsible for making the popularity of "chicle chewing gum" skyrocket.White's Yucatan " Chewing Gum WrapperWhite was an early maker and seller of candy (1869) and began manufacturing chewing gum in 1880 after solving the problem of chicle not holding its flavor. White's first chewing gum was a peppermint flavored gum he named "Yucatan" which is a reference to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico where all the chicle used for chewing gum was extracted from the Sapodilla tree.
