W. J. WhiteWilliam John White ( 1850 - 1923) was one of but only a handful of American chewing gum pioneers. Even though other individuals such as Adams were using and selling "chicle" (a rubber like substance from the Sapodilla tree) as chewing gum - it would be many years later - before chicle became popular given it had no flavor. Things changed in 1880...when an individual named William White made an important discovery and solved the problem of chicle not absorbing/holding its flavors. He combined flavors with sugar and corn syrup then blended the mixture with the chicle which solved t he problem. For taste he added peppermint extract and discovered that peppermint stayed in the gum while chewing much longer than other flavors.
