LARGE AND FINE 1920 WHITING STERLING SILVER NEO-CLASSICAL FORM CENTRE BOWL; ELEGANT PIERCED CLASSICAL BASKET FILLED WITH RIPENED FRUIT AND FLORALS; FINEST HAND CHASED FINISH DETAIL; RAISED STREAMING FLORAL BORDERS; 35 OUNCES This is a beautifully designed and meticulously crafted early 20th century Whiting sterling silver centre bowl. Date marked by the firm for 1920 production. The renowned New York City firm was founded in 1840, as Tift & Whiting. Became Whiting Mfg. Co. in 1866. Acquired by Gorham in 1924. Known for almost a century for silverwares of creative design and finest finish detail. The centre bowl in classic raised circular design. Well wrought, step and banded border. With delicate raised streaming florals. Below, pierced basket, fruit and floral decoration. In the Neo-classical taste. Elegant satin chased diamond panel baskets. Overflowing with ripened fruit and lush florals. Streaming leaf and wing "wings" stretch outward. Alternating with unique applied "spread wing" wavy vine bands. The centre bowl supported upon thick, stepped streaming floral decorated base. Monogrammed to interior "RWH. This large and fine, 1920 date marked Whiting Neo-classical centre bowl is 12 1/4 inches diameter and 6 inches tall. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction, weighs 35 ounces. In excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands perfectly firm on table or sideboard. The elegant Neo-classical inspired decoration retains its originial crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. The centre bowl mild tarnish spots interior centre only, and few shallow pinhead size bumps. None at all distracting. Hallmarked to underside. Including Whiting's coveted date symbol. "X" for 1920 production. Only four years before the firm was acquired by Gorham.
