I am pleased to offer this exceptional dining table and eight chairs. It was manufactured by the John Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan, around 1959. The designer was J. Stuart Clingman, one of the pioneers of Mid-Century Modern, Danish-inspired furniture design. Along with his contemporaries T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings and George Nakashima, Clingman was a highly sought-after furniture designer who produced some of the finest designs for John Widdicomb and other Grand Rapids manufacturers. Clingman was one of the founding members of the Grand Rapids Furniture Designers Association, a group of designers that included the top names in Mid-Century furniture design who worked in Grand Rapids, a mecca for modern furniture manufacturing in the era. Not a lot of Clingman furniture was manufactured, so it is hard to come by today. He designed for John Widdicomb’s more upscale clientele, and his furniture was not made in great quantities. His designs were largely custom made. This suite is made from fine cherry wood throughout, and is in excellent condition. The table measures 68” long and 44” wide without leaves. With all three 18" leaves in place, the table measures a hefty 122” long. The beautifully matched and configured grain of the wood along with the slight curve of the top and the elegant taper of the legs make this table a real eye-catcher. There are two additional legs under the table which fold out for extra support when the leaves are used. The table shows only minor nicks and scratches. All dowels in the leaves are present and fit snugly. The extension slides and locking mechanism under the table work perfectly. A complete set of table pads is included, as is a specially designed crate for storing the leaves. The chairs have been reupholstered in a beautiful light plum fabric with minor signs of wear. There are six side chairs and two captains chairs. I do not know whether the original fabric was left under the present fabric. The original black non-decorative fabric remains on the underside of the chair cushions, and some of the chairs still have the John Widdicomb sticker on them. There is minor damage to the caning on two of the chairs, and I have shown this in the photos. The other six chairs are near flawless, with only minor scuffs and scratches from use. In general, the chairs are in excellent condition and are very comfortable. All brass tips on the legs are present and in perfect shape.
