WIGAN PIT BROW GIRL CARTE de VISITE PHOTOGRAPH A wonderful opportunity for collectors of mining memorabilia A 19c card size 4 inches x 2.5 inches with an original photograph c 1880 showing a Wigan pit brow girl who would have worked at Wigan Junction Coal Mine or Colliery Photographers stamp on the reverse J Cooper Wigan Most girls and women worked at the surface sorting out shale from the coal although in earlier Victorian times they worked underground where they would push wagons from the mineshaft to the surface The photo shows the standard dress of girls at the time , a pair of trousers covered with a skirt, a headscarf to protect their hair from coal dust, and a jacket. She is holding a sieve and spade , the tools of her trade and most likely was the daughter of a miner although widows of miners would work there as well A rare piece of 19c social history - working women of the day. I have recently been down the mine at the National Coal Mining Museum in Yorkshire where further information is available about women and children at work in the mines in the 19c - a fascinating story of those difficult times
