Oil on canvas glued on a board Signed W.J. Aylward c.c 1924 18x22 inches unframed 22.5x25.5 inches framed Very good conditionPainted by American painter William James Aylward (1875-1956). Aylward studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art's Students League of New-York City. He started his career as an illustrator. He was sent to France by the government during WWI to paint and record the activities of the ports and transportation systems developed to support industrial warfare. He stayed in France afterwards and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1924.The painting represents the port of Collioure in the South of France.A watercolor representing a sailing ship (incomplete) was glued on the other side of the board.
