Saloon Society by Bill Manville is a collection of some the writier's tales of the bar scene in Greenwich Village from his column in The Village Voice. La Dolce Vita in NYC--post-Beat, pre-60s, pre-Dylan, pre- Beatles --it's an odd juncture in the social life of the city, with the pre-war eminence-gris still making his hand felt in this book's lively design.
