THE SUNDERING FLOOD By William Morris Published by Longmans, Green in New York in 1898 this is the First American Edition of William Morris's last fictional work. The Sundering Flood was Morris's last work of fiction, completed only in rough draft, with the ending dictated from his deathbed and edited by his daughter May into finished form for publication. It was first published posthumously in hardcover by Morris's famous Kelmscott Press in 1897 and in this edition a year later. There are 373 pages, uncut to the fore & bottom edges. Its importance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by its republication by Ballantine Books as the fifty-seventh volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in 1973. Morris considered his fantasies a revival of the medieval tradition of chivalrous romances. The original maroon cloth covers are generally clean and sound, with slight edge-wear and some fading to the spine - see pic 1 - but probably less than you might expect of a book of this age. The spine label remains intact. The binding is tight and secure and the text is clean and bright. There is some foxing to the endpapers - see pic 3 - where there is an attractive (Arts and Crafts?) bookplate for Mrs Stephen Ralli. Mrs Ralli was a well-known philanthropist in Hove in Sussex in the very early part of the 20th century. read more
