However, he was also a supremely gifted and committed teacher . At Dublin 's Metropolitan School of Art, where he taught from 1902 to the outbreak of the First World War, one student recalls, 'He brought about a revolution in the life of the class.' Key to this revolution was Orpen's use of his own drawings to teach the students anatomy. Twenty of these extraordinary drawings are reproduced in this book. Drawn on black sugar paper, their white chalk outlines are often rendered in one, continuous line in a confident and smoothly unwavering hand. Unlike simple medical illustrations, they transcend their purpose, somehow communicating all the beauty and poetry of what it is to be human. It is hard to imagine the impact and importance of these drawings on Orpen's students in Dublin in the early years of the twentieth century. Today, reproduced together for the first time, they appear not only startlingly modern, but timeless."
