These are very special instruments in that they belonged to William Weir. William Weir is best known for overseeing repairs to historic buildings including Dartington Hall, Tattershall Castle and Bodiam Castle.[ His work spanned more than forty British counties and more than 300 buildings, including scores of small town and country churches. He collaborated with many of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts Movement such as William Morris, Ernest Gimson, Norman Jewson and Detmar Blow.Of particular interest however is that two of the instruments were presented to him by the great Philip Webb and are inscribed "From Philp Webb To William Weir". Philip Webb is one of the most important people in the Arts and Craft movement. he was a friend of William Morris and a co founder of the great Morris & Co. He is particularly noted as the designer of Red House at Bexleyheath, southeast London in 1859 for William Morris. It makes perfect sense that these instruments bear this inscription becausee in 1889 William Weir began the final stage of his training, with Philip Webb at his chambers in Gray's Inn and spent 8 years with him. It is not hard to imagine that these were presented to him at the end of his training. Many of the other instruments are marked WW for William Weir. On their own they could have belonged to anyone but I purchased read more
