DARK HORSE SYROCO FIGURE WILMA DEERING FROM BUCK ROGERS The original Syrocos (part of the collectibles category now called âeoeSyroco-like figures) date back to the 1930s and âe~40s, taking their name from the company that manufactured them, the Syracuse Ornamental Company, later Syroco. They originally manufactured a line of novelty items that included cigarette boxes, pipe racks, plates, serving trays, and figurines of popular entertainers and public personalities that were meant for sale in roadside souvenir shops. The most notable Syrocos included public figures such as George Washington. For many years, though, the Syroco-like figures from the same period featuring characters belongs to King Feature Syndicate were thought by collectors to have been produced by Syroco. It has since been discovered that they were produced by Multi-Prodcuts of Chicago, IL. In 2000, Dark Horse revived one the Syroco style of figures with their Classic Comic Characters line, which captures the look of the originals. Although they continue to produce hit lines of figures in this style, they have completely sold out of the original series. Diamond International Galleries is pleased to offer a selection of figures from that series. Dark Horse created a run of 600 of this character. Each one was individually numbered and came with a button and collectors pamphlet inside a detailed tin. We cannot guarantee the exact number of the individual figure you will receive. Sculpted by Yoe! Studios, the figure captures Wilma Deering perfectly. Her name is inscribed along the base. The figure measures 5 1/4" tall and stands on a 1 3/4" round base. The Wilma Deering character was #40 in the series by Dark Horse. Buck Rogers was the first American comic strip to plunge into science fiction and it enjoyed great success after it was introduced in January 1929. The story was adapted by Phil Nowlan from his futuristic novel, illustrated by Dick Calkins and syndicated by the John F. Dille Co. Buck wakes after 500 years of suspended animation and, along with young Wilma Deering and the old scientist Dr. Huer, battles to save America and the earth from various enemies, in particular Killer Kane and Ardala Valmar, who want to conquer the world. Wilma Deering was at his side from the start. She was crucial to the strip's success and she also brought many young girls into the world of sci-fi.The strip ran until 1967 (a companion Sunday strip appeared from 1930 to 1965) and both were revived in 1979 to 1983. A successful radio adaptation was broadcast from 1932 to 1947, sponsored first by Kellogg, then Cocomalt, Cream of Wheat, Popsicle and General Foods. A TV version had a brief run in 1950-1951 and a revised series, produced by Glen Larson and starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray, debuted in 1979 and lasted two seasons. Movie adaptations appeared in 1939, with Buster Crabbe, and 1979 (released theatrically but also serving as the pilot for the Larson series). Crabbe had a memorable cameo in one episode of the âe~80s series. T have also been a variety of Big Little Books and comic books over the years and many reprints.
