This is a very rare 2 blade pen knife with the patented Wilzin opening system. Each blade has a button which releases the blade far enough to grip it with the fingers and open it all the way. The knife was made by Hatch Cutlery Co (1886-1898). I believe it was made in1892 because it seems to be a commemorative knife made for the 1892 Columbian Exposition celebrating the 400th year after Columbus' landing. The scales are aluminum and are embossed with scenes of Columbus landing. The scales have some wear but the embossing is clear in most places. Both button mechanisms work. Please note t is some spreading on the end with the pen blade. The pen blade releases and opens as it should, but when closing it falls on the file blade and must be pushed slightly sideways to seat into the handles, then the button must be pushed back to lock it down. The file blade releases and opens as it should but falls on the pen blade when closing and also must but nudged over to close completely, but the file blade locks down by itself. The pen blade is stamped Hatch Cutlery arched over Co and t appears to be something beneath that but I cannot make it out. The file blade is stamped Pat Apr 3 over '89. The very tip of the pen blade is chipped and t are some small nicks in the blades as shown. The knife measures 3 1/4" closed from button tip to button tip. read more
