This is an original, Winchester Store cardboard 5 panel window sign or display advertising Hand Tools (including a large Old Trusty Hand Saw with store tag!) and Christmas Gifts available in the Winchester Stores for all ages. The sign was produced for use during November and December 1923 . During the 1920's Winchester produced hardware, sporting goods, and house wares and sold them in their own line of stores, Winchester Stores. The five panel signs were created to be displayed in the large store windows that were typical of a store at that time. The first five panel signs came out in March 1920 and continued through approximately April 1929. They were made to advertise items in the the Winchester Stores - tools, guns, cutlery, sporting goods, flashlights, paint, fishing tackle. Each of the five 40" x 19" panels were placed in wood frames (also manufactured by Winchester-see below) and the frame was placed in the window. Early signs were single sided, displayed for a week and then changed. In October 1920, in a cost saving measure, the signs were double sided for usage at multiple times of the year, still on a weekly basis. In 1926 production of the five panel sets began on a monthly basis. Research shows that at least 29 one sided sets and 47 double sided sets were produced. These five panel signs are highly prized by collectors today . The sign is the actual sign shown on page 140 of the Winchester Rarities Book by Kowalski. A description of the sign and the significance of the items shown in it from the owner's website is included here: CHRISTMAS-November 15-21 and December 6-26,1923)- another of the very good Winchester 5-panel sets that shows many neat and very scarce WINCHESTER items on each individual panel. Again, I am selling the actual 5-panel set used in the Winchester "RARITIES" book pp.140. (Side-#1)-Titled "WINCHESTER STORE CHRISTMAS". This is the WINCHESTER STORE decoration display for that Christmas season, it has green HOLLY leaves in each of the four corners of each panel. The CENTER panel is most collectible, displaying ("THE WINCHESTER STORE"-in the middle-in EXTRA LARGE LETTERS). The other panels show many Winchester product ideas for the Christmas holidays. Some of them are: a FOOTBALL and UNIFORM, a BASKETBALL, PUNCHING BAG and Gloves, 4 BASEBALLS and 2 bats, a rare advertising MANICURE SET, FISHING RODS-REELS-LURES & Lines and best of all (3) Winchester Guns (MODEL-94, MODEL-90 and MODEL-12). (side-#2)-Titled "MULTIPLE TOOLS". Shows each individual panel with a full display of WINCHESTER TOOLS. (#1-SCREWDRIVERS), (#2-PLIERS), (#3-WRENCHES), (#4-FILES) and (#5-CHISELS). One on the most desirable features is that each side, and on each panel there is the red "STAGGERED" Winchester Script LETTERS. Both sides and all panels are in MINTY condition, have no restoration of any kind! Note: The photos shown are furnished by the owner. I am limited to 12 photos by Ebay. There are usually more available at the owner's website called The Winchester Store. Please check them out. Overall condition is excellent. The owner upgraded numerous times to achieve this quality. Normal wear from usage, age such as light stains, missing corners, edge abrasion. Often this damage occurred during placing in the wood frames and is hidden (if within 1" or so from edge) when replaced is frame, as it shown here. The printed graphics are outstanding without repairs or reproductions. Absolutely stunning when all panels are placed together. These panels can be mounted on foam core board and protected by shrinkwrap, or they can be placed in wooden frames (either original or reproduction, not part of this auction.
