This is an original, Winchester Store cardboard 5 panel window sign or display advertising Hand Tools (including a large Old Trusty Hand Saw with store tag!) and Christmas Gifts available in the Winchester Stores for all ages. The sign was produced for use during November and December 1923 . During the 1920's Winchester produced hardware, sporting goods, and house wares and sold them in their own line of stores, Winchester Stores. The five panel signs were created to be displayed in the large store windows that were typical of a store at that time. The first five panel signs came out in March 1920 and continued through approximately April 1929. They were made to advertise items in the the Winchester Stores - tools, guns, cutlery, sporting goods, flashlights, paint, fishing tackle. Each of the five 40" x 19" panels were placed in wood frames (also manufactured by Winchester-see below) and the frame was placed in the window. Early signs were single sided, displayed for a week and then changed. In October 1920, in a cost saving measure, the signs were double sided for usage at multiple times of the year, still on a weekly basis. In 1926 production of the five panel sets began on a monthly basis. Research shows that at least 29 one sided sets and 47 double sided sets were produced.
