WINE AMPHORA, PHOENICIAN, EARLYMEDITERRANEAN POT, 1000 - 600 BC Height: 12" Center Diameter: 6 1/2" Weight: 5 lbs 11.4 oz This wonderfully ancient, single-handle pot came out of a New York State , Hudson River antiquities estate sale. The "jug" a single-handled amphora with a narrow neck and thick pouring spout. Intact, minor dings, abrasion scratches. Some surface discoloration along the sides. The style, grit composition, as well as the general collection provenance indicate it is a Phoenician ceramic--it came from a prehistoric Mediterranean collection. Jugs such as this were household items used to store/pour wine--note the small rim-neck opening: perfect for a cork stopper. The original collection was put together in the late 1800s to compliment the massive, Gilded Age mansions found along the eastern Hudson River north of New York City . Families of means would take the "Grand European Tour" and come back heavy with art and ancient artifacts to display in their opulent river-side homes. An intriguing artifact from a Mediterranean culture known for its vast trade routes and thriving sea-side culture--as well as being the designers of the earliest alphabet.
