These woodblock prints were never framed, and were the personal file copies of California Artist Lewis Ryan. Ryan was also obviously experimenting with making art paper. Lewis C. Ryan was born in Texas, grew up in Washington State, and lived in Escondido California from 1919 on. Primarily a printmaker, his work was published in popular magazines of the 1920's and 1930's such as the Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Westways, and the Los Angeles Times. His superb use of line and color aligns him both with the Early Modernist Art of the American Southwest and the American Arts and Crafts movement.
