Be sure to have a look at our other items !This is an excellent find of a very nice, working, very large, hand carved, 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3 bird and chicks in a nest case design that was created in the Black Forest of what was then, "West Germany" about 55 years ago by the "Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company," you don't get any more original than that! Actually the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company did a great deal to popularize the cuckoo clock since they were very quick to mobilize right after WWII and did all they could to get their clocks into the hands of returning GI's following the war. May Dad brought one home and I remember it to this day. The clock is very high quality, just gorgeous on display, and has a remarkable blended walnut and mahogany finish; very nice! The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The front is adorned with seven, large, hand carved grape leaves and another grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum itself. There is a carved, wooden bird, a cuckoo I suspect, on either side of the case staring upward at an equally impressive, large, carved wooden bird atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. There is a carved wooden nest on the lower part between the birds with two carved chicks in the nest. I don't ever recall seeing a case design like this; very nice! The dial has a black backdrop and features large, easy to read, raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy matching hands to point out the time. The word, "Germany" appears in small block letters on the lower part of the dial. The case has a wooden back door and is secured with a metal latch. The back removes easily to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, 8 day movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the Cuckoo Clock Mfg Co name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. Regula makes the best movements and CCMC used them in all of their high end clocks. The tall wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door above the dial opens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single deep cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled metal chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The cuckoo bird comes out again at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos beautifully as well. We don't know the service history but it does seem to have been maintained pretty well. Regardless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn a classic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any missing pieces, damage, or repairs and just little signs of use. It is a very impressive clock and one of the largest I've seen in recent years measuring about 19" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at is deepest point, and about 13" or so across the top. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock would be a welcome addition to any collection and is certain to please you as well as capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a gorgeous, rare Black Forest timepiece with a wonderful history behind it.... read more
