In this auction we are offering a 12" terrestrial Globe made by the Weber Costello Co. ( Chicago Heights ), displaying the political borders of 1919. The Globe identifies cities such as Petrograd (1914-24) and Christiana (changed to Oslo in 1924) as well as many other historic sites and nations long gone. Note the beautifully detailed base in an Art Nouveau design style. Weber Costello was established in 1907, after Thomas Costello became Vice President of Weber & Co in 1900. Once Weber Costello obtained A.H. Andrews & Co, it became the largest Globe Manufacture in the US until some time in the 1930's. As a matter of fact, during that period Weber Costello did mot only manufacture their own Globe models, but also printed for Cram, Denoyer-Geppert, Nystrom and Rand McNally. The company focused on school globes as their cartouche identifies it: WC Time Tested School Supply. However, Weber Costello also produced some of the most beautiful mountings, such as the highly desirable deco airplane base and this attractive nouveau style. Unfortunately the company is a name of the past as they closed their door in the late 1950's or early 1960's. All that remains are some of the most magnificent terrestrial globes ever made. This is a very fine Globe and could be a wonderful addition to any collection. However, it does have some damage. read more
