WW II Pattern U.S. GI M1 Helmet Back seam, marked with 537 and an ‘S’. Had this been marked as 537 with a letter, I would be more positive it is from WWII; about late 1943. However, both the 537 and S are clearly visible. Helmet is missing one of the swivel bails, which were introduced in 1943, the corking is low relief, and there is a small dent on top but in other wise good condition. It does not appear to have been refurbished as there are a few small surface rust spots. The major helmet makers in WWII were the Schlueter Co and McCord Co and their helmets were indicated with an ‘S’ and an ‘M’ respectively. Production figures were approximately 2,000,000 for Schlueter and 20,000,000 for McCord during the war. The liner is the one which came with the helmet when I bought it. It has a very small stylized ‘F’ which looks like the Firestone logo; it was impossible to photograph with my camera. It has the classic stripped pattern and is better shape than the helmet. From new information I received, this is a World War II helmet; about late 1943. Thanks to the many eBayers who cleared this up for me!!!
