For your consideration today is this third version of the French Model 1886 rifle bayonet ... The original pattern was usually 26 inches in total length including the scabbard with the Quill blade breaker hand guard... The blade and scabbard on the second pattern was cut down, a proven design change from use in the field, reduced to 14- 1/2 inches in length... This, the 3rd conversion had the Quill removed an saw service through WW1... This bayonet is 19 inches in total length including the scabbard... The scabbard has 5 stamped maker marks with only the last two serial numbers visible,-{88}... It has No rust or dents with a great aged look to it, & fits the blade well.. The bayonet's blade is in great shape with No rust, pitting, or bends and is shown marked with a double letter {F.F}... The spring latch assembly is fully functional and is rust free, marked 17312 w the Quill was cut off... The brass handle shows its long use but remains in good condition...
