The year 2014 will mark the centenary year of the commencement of World War One in 1914, a cataclysmic event in which wholesale slaughter resulted in millions of deaths, physically and mentally wounded and affected families in nearly every street. The conflict- 'the war to end all wars' -redefined the map of Europe and the founding of new political & racial factions led eventually to WW11. This indeed then is a fitting time to remember these men & women who fell, served or were just affected by these events. An action packed pair of pictures showing British troops in action and naturally 'winning'. These heroic scenes were just what folks back home lapped up. Several artists produced prolific amounts of such work for newspapers and magazines for home consumption in keeping up morale and encouraging recruitment. Apart from the sometimes contrived imagery, the actual high quality of artwork cannot and should not not be ignored. All prints are sized externally (ie to outside edges of mounts) 10"x8" (254mm x 203mm). Gavrelle Mill changed hands some eight times before finally being secured. Bavarian storm-troops made a last forlorn hope attack only to be repulsed by bomb and bayonet. The 11th East Lancashires battalion (Accrington Pals) saw action here in support of the 92nd Division's unsuccessful attack on the village of Oppy. Despite their support role the Pals still suffered 47 casualties in five days. Pic2 ref W144A . An action packed picture by R. Caton Woodville showing British infantry capturing a German battery of 7.7cm field guns at the point of the bayonet early in the April offensive. Note the visored helmets worn by some of the German artillerymen. Several famous artists produced a plethora of military artwork at this time and included : Eduardo, Frank Dadd, R. Caton Woodville, S. Begg, Amedee Forestiere, Harry Paine, J. Simont, Georges Scott, and Ugo. R. Caton-Woodville was already famous for his many Boer War pictures and Amedee Forestiere was known for his prehistoric man classic works. Fortunino Matania produced 100s of sketches of near photographic quality for the London Sphere in particular and later did many of the Tarzan illustrations of Edgar Rice Burroughs & other science-fiction pictures which are very collectable. He is more fondly known to me as the wonderful illustrator of medieval historical spreads in the 1960s educational weekly 'Look & Learn' to which I looked forward avidly every Friday. These prints are original pictures taken from a contemporary book printed during WW1 ; they are not photocopies or modern reproductions. The mounts are new & the items are assembled by myself.
