Camp during the Great War. From that point on its "guests" included captured soldiers from numerous Allied Nations (of which there were 22!). Here you have a very rare WW1 era banknote issued by the said town. The front, which is engraved in the art nouveau manner, features the town coat of arms with a medieval castle flanked by the names of the mayor and town officials. The remarkable reverse features a sepia tone real photo with the inscription in German: " Types of Prisoners from the Mathausen Camp 1914 * 1918 ". Based on our military knowledge which is not complete the prisoners are (from left to right)... A Russian Soldier An Italian Soldier A British Soldier A French Colonial Soldier who is BLACK ! A French Soldier The featured inmates all appear well fed and in good health and spirits without any hint of mistreatment. This was NOT the case with the Jewish inmates that would occupy the same camp 20-25 years later. In fact, by then it had become a Nazi Concentration Camp which was responsible for some 150,000 deaths. For more details see: /forgottencamps/camps/mauthauseneng. read more
