I picked this up over 20 years ago on a 'Brocante' stall in Lion-sur-Mer in the Calvados region of Normandy. (Lion-sur-Mer was part of the Sword Beach coastline where the British came ashore.)As you can see from the photos, the raised markings bear the date 1944 and the British Military broad arrow or 'crow's foot'.The spanner's jaw measurements are unusual too. They don't directly correspond to inches as you might expect. Beneath the fractions there is a 'W'. This apparently stands for 'Whitworth' and refers to a reintroduction of a Victorian standard of measurements due to wartime cutbacks on steel. Here is a link to a more detailed explanation if you're really interested !!! http://www.sat./psc/spanner_jaw.html According to this website, modern spanners don't fit a lot of old WW2 vehicles, so if you're doing one up this could be the thing for you !! If not, it's a fantastic object in its own right, so grab yourself a little piece of history.
