With the Pacific fleet in ruins, military planners were at a loss to how. Then the idea was proposed that a B-25 bomber be launched from a deck of an aircraft carrier. The famous Doolittle raid on Japan began on the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet on April 18, 1942. Chinese peasants rescued Cole and his crew. Cole and Doolittle would return safely to the U.S. as heroes. Today, t are only 13 Doolittle raiders alive and to this day celebrate April 18th.
