During WW2, he was attached to the 4th Polizei Division in the Battle of France, and from 1942 starting with Operation Barbarossa on to 1944, he commanded Polizei troops in battling the Communist Russians, especially in the Battle of Leningrad. Ultimately, Traupe was given command of the 4th Polizeigrenadier Division, 22nd Panzergrenadier Regiment and the 10th Panzer Division Frundsberg. Because of his personal bravery, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold, and later, because of his extreme personal bravery and successful military leadership in combat, the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross.
