Genuine, authentic, original hand signed War photograph of Luftwaffe Ace Oberst (Colonel) Walter Oesau. Oesau was a German Luftwaffe pilot during World War II, who served in the Luftwafffe from 1934 until his death in 1944. He rose to command Jagdgeschwader I, which was named in his honor after his death. Oesau served with the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and 3 Staffel of Jagdgruppe 88, claiming 8 aircraft during the campaign, becoming one of only 28 people to earn the award of the Spanish Cross in Gold and Diamonds. At the start of WW2, Oesau was given command of 2 Staffel, Jagdgeschwader 20, the group which moved to the Eastern Front at the start of the Invasion of Poland, moving back to the Western Front later. After his first victory of WW2 in the Battle of France, Oesau operated on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, where he was wounded and received the Silver Wound Badge. Oesau had an impressive 118 victories against the Allies. He was killed in action on May 11, 1944 at age 30. JG 1 was given the suffix "Oesau" in his honor. Because of his military leadership and bravery, he was award the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oakleaves and Swords, one of only 160 soldiers to receive this high honor during the War.
