See the scans of the front and back of the identification tag at 150%. This is a two piece lot with a standard WWI dogtag named to "P. MATTER CO. E 307 INF." (Reverse "1680849" over the letter "C" which probably stands for "Catholic"). The document is for his award of the Distinguished Service Cross. This is the official wartime document given to him with the medal and with embossed stamp "HEADQUARTERS 77TH DIVISION OFFICIAL COPY." This paper is about 5 x 8" size. As you can see, Private Peter Matter was awarded his DSC, which was number "845," "for extraordinary heroism in action near Fismes, France, 27 August, 1918" for his work as a stretcher bearer after being severely burned and gassed and wounded by an exploding mustard gas shell. He was from Niagara Falls, New York. Some years ago, I owned his D.S.C. and related items, which I no longer have. I kept this document and dog tag for my dog tag collection. Interesting document and tag to a WWI American hero. Generally XF condition. Document has creases, but no stains or tears and only very minor age discoloration. NO RESERVE !!!
