This is an intriguing uniform that I have had for over twenty years. It is a summer weight canvas enlisted mans uniform, Air Service cocade on the shoulder, red honorable discharge stripe, three oversaes stripes, and Victory medal bar with two stars. What makes it interesting is the wing and prop insignia on the right sleeve. This indicates that the wearer was a pilot in the French Army. The other interesting thing is the Legion of Honor cord. While the Croix de Guerre was given out to Americans left and right the award of the Legion of Honor was much rarer. The French Army had enlisted pilots and the American Army did not. Was this guy a volunteer pilot for the French and when the Americans came into the war he was only an elisted man, so he did not make pilot? It would be a good reserach project to find the names of American Legion of Honor winners and see if it would show this man. This is as I got it a long time ago. The French pilot wing and Legion of Honor cord are probably worth the price alone!
