Great scrapbook and personal items for Dr. Richard Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Commanding Officer of Hospital Unit Q. Grouping consists of beautiful patriotic framed photo of major, Dr. Smith. Frame has crossed flags at bottom, stars around sides and top and an eagle at top with enamelled shield. Also silver officer's trench watch with engraving on reverse of "Lt. Col. Richard R. Smith Grand Rapids, Mich." Made by Waltham. Luminous parts of hands and some numbers has flaked away but still looks great. Watch runs but winding knob comes off. One dog tag marked Richard R. Smith Major Hosp. Unit Q USA. Several pieces of Major insignia, large and small and two Lt. Col. insignia, one of which is marked sterling on reverse. Also some misc. medical collar insignia, son in service pin with one star and medical insignia suspended below. Also some lodge items from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Scrap book is stuffed with information about Hospital Unit Q from Grand Rapids- from beginning of mobilization, training at Ft. McPherson, Ga, shipment to Europe, setting up of hospital at Autuil Racecourse in Paris, treatment of wounded soldiers from battle at Chateau-Thierry, caring for only the most seriously wounded in a French village, air raids on hospital, etc., etc. many articles from newspapers- this hospital unit cared for over 10,000 patients, read more
