This is an original WWII V-Mail letter with great hand drawn graphics. It is a Christmas card from a P-47 Thunderbolt pilot to his wife back in the states. It features pictures that were carefully drawn in pencil. The individual items that were drawn include two holly branches, Christmas bells, a P-47 Thunderbolt plane with a "B" on the side (his initial), two palm trees, a 1st Lt. pilot (a caricature of the sender of the card) holding cards saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, an AAF (Army Air Force) insignia, Pilot's Wings, and a 5th Air Force insignia. It is signed Love, Dave. This comes from the estate of an officer that flew a P-47 Thunderbolt plane in the Pacific and CBI theaters as part of the 311th Fighter Squadron of the 5th Air Force. He was in the Philippines area for part of the time, and it is likely that he was in that region when this V-Mail was drawn. He won an Air Medal about two months after this was sent by shooting down an enemy plane over the island of Luzon. He was a mechanical engineer, and his drafting skills are evident in the drawing. The lines are very exact, and the shading is technically very solid. It is obvious that he spent a lot of time working on this to get it right. It displays very well and would look good if it were framed. It is addressed:To: Mrs. David C. Batey48 Pettee StreetNewton Upper read more
