I'm dramatically reducing the size of my personal collection and will be posting many items over the coming weeks, so please check out my other current auctions and keep your eyes peeled for new ones in the days ahead! This is one of several WWII flying helmets I'll be auctioning this week. It's a U.S. Navy model AN6540 - 4W winter flying helmet, as distinguished from the several variants of the model by its multi-piece construction with no brow piece, shearling lining, and the addition of buckles for an oxygen mask on either side of the helmet. This type of helmet was issued to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators beginning in 1943 and it remained in use through the war's end. A representative example of this helmet can be seen on page 297 of Mick Prodger's excellent reference for collectors "Vintage Flying Helmets." This helmet is a highly desirable size EXTRA LARGE and it is in excellent, wearable condition. The exterior leather is soft and supple with no holes and all seams are tight. T is a nice, bold "USN" embossed on the left rear (see photo). All snaps and fittings work as they should; the interior shearling is fresh and clean, and the original adjustment pulls are still present. T are no defects I can see. If I wanted to be picky, I could point to some minor surface cracking on the chinstrap, but this is only on the surface. read more
