Yard of BeerGlass, with an Oak Wooden Stand and Cleaning Brush This Yard of Beer measures a full 36 inches. Be leery of the cheap imitations that are only 32 tall and have a shipping weight of less than 4 lbs. (including the stands and in the box). The shipping weight on this yard / stand combination is almost 8 lbs. You will be able to feel the difference in glass quality between this Yard and the cheaper imitations. Let's be reasonable, this thing will get banged around while you're using it, especially at parties. If the glass isn't thick enough to withstand a couple of innocent knocks, than how much fun can it be. This ones also comes with a brush for cleaning it. How else would you clean down inside something this long and thin. It's easy to jam a cloth down into the neck, but how would you get it back out? I included a picture of what everything look like in the box before I stuffed newspaper into all the voids, so that you could see how it is packaged and be confident that it will not be broken during shipping. Shipping Insurance is included and I did not inflate the shipping cost. It is based on your location and shipping a package that weighs 8 pounds, with insurance, to you. I've had a lot of fun with this Yard, but it is in perfect shape with no dings chips or scratched in either the Yard or the Stand. The Stand is a light Oak. I bought this Authentic Yard of Ale from a glass shop in Colonial Williamsburg. If memory serves me, it was hand blown in that particular shop and I paid over $100.00 for it. Be the "Hit of the Party" This is a Yard of Beer Glass. It's also commonly referred to as a "Yard of Ale", leading many to believe that its origin was of Early English Pub's. But, if that were the case, wouldn't they be called a "Meter of Ale". Its unique 36 inch elongated shape was first invented in the 17th Century to allow barkeeps to pass a refreshing drink to a parched stagecoach driver while sitting high atop his coach, and not forcing him to climb down. The funnel shape at the top was designed as a non-slip, non spill feature. The proper way to fill a "Yard of Beer" is with 16 oz. of beer, and let the foam fill the glass to the top of the neck. A Yard becomes overfilled when the beer or the foam enters the funnel area. Remember that the idea behind this type of beer glass is to have a container that is nearly spill proof and that separates the beer from the foam while being drank from. Over filling is common. The beer should not begin to flow from the Yard until it's raised to a level that is over parallel to the ground. As the Yard reaches that level, the beer flows downwards, while the foam retreats. This phenomenon adds to the popularity of the Yard because it's the only container that allows the drinker to enjoy the beer completely without foam. This foam separating design came in handy when the coach driver drank his warm beer after it had been jostled around while in the hands of the barkeep running (or sometimes even on horse back) to meet the stage. The funnel shape also lent itself to be an overflow area for the foam while in this unorthodox means of transport. The trick to drinking from a Yard is in controlling the flow once it begins to reach your mouth. Because the beers velocity is hidden by the foam, most beginners end up wearing a great deal of the beer. This is especially true when the air reaches the ball and breaks the vacuum, allowing the beer to careen down the neck at a speed that is equal the now exaggerated slop. A clue/hint for you: As you raise the yard to horizontal, begin a slight swirling motion, about 6 inches in diameter at the ball. That will slow the velocity of the flow, and allow the vacuum to dissipate from the ball more uniformly. It takes practice to master. It also looks even more impressive if you can balance the Yard using only one hand. It's fun to watch the novices.
